Qualifications of a Deacon

March 30, 2025 | Zach Schlegel
Passage: 1 Timothy 3:8-11

If you are in a situation where you need lifesaving surgery, how important are the doctor's credentials? Qualifications matter, not just for those who care for your physical body, but also for those caring for your soul.

Deacons serve by meeting practical needs and by supporting the role of the elders. In Acts 6, we see people coming to Christ, but we also see a problem. The Hellenistic Jewish widows were being neglected. The Apostles brought the disciples together to select men who would come up with a solution to meet the need.

Elders and deacons have different roles, but they come together for a common goal - for the word of God to increase. How we structure ourselves as a church matters because the church is to be the pillar and buttress of truth. It is God’s heart for all people to be saved, so coming together in a unified purpose is essential.
