Passage: 1 Timothy 3:14-16
When a person becomes a Christian, the change in that person is so radical that the bible uses terms like “born again” or “new creation.” A new freedom is gained. We are able to say “no” to the sin that we once struggled with. Yet sometimes, we may still see ourselves as a prisoner. However, the prison doors are open - we are set free. Are you accustomed to the prison of anxiety, lust, greed, etc.? There is a strange and deadly comfort in the path we once knew. The same thing happened to the people of Israel once they were liberated from slavery. At the Red Sea, given a chance to trust God or go back to slavery, they begged to go back. Trusting God was an unknown.
We obey God because we are a new creation. We have His approval, in Christ Jesus. That is the heart of the Christian ethic. We are learning to walk in the freedom that Christ earned for us. Our obedience flows out of a new identity. Where do you find your identity? Who are we - the church? What is our God-given purpose as the church?
