Passage: Revelation 8:1-9:21
As we enter the part of Revelation, be reminded that the visions of the seven trumpets happen simultaneously with the vision of the seven seals we see in chapter six. These things are not necessarily in chronological order. John structures the seven seals and the seven trumpets in the same way. The first five seals and the first six trumpets mark what is happening now. The sixth and seventh seal and the seventh trumpet mark what happens at the end of time and at the time of the final judgment.
They show different perspectives of the same event. The seal judgments affect the Christians, testing, purifying, and strengthening our faith. The trumpet judgments affect the wicked with the purpose of leading them to repentance.
The second thing to remember is that the book of Revelation is apocalyptic literature, using symbols to teach a literal truth. These visions are not photographs but abstract paintings of the future. The symbols are rooted in the Old Testament, so our knowledge of the Old Testament is important. What is the message of Revelation 8 and 9?
