Passage: Revelation 21:9-27
The world is a dangerous place. We take every precaution to stay safe - passwords, locks, cameras, airbags, insurance etc. We have a longing for peace, contentment, security, and joy. God made us this way. We get glimpses of it, but because of sin, it is fleeting. Sin makes life frustrating and painful. In today’s scripture, notice the glory of God and the theme of walls (a symbol of security).
We shouldn’t read the verses in this text as a random blueprint, but as divine insider information as the best place to live. In chapter 17, we see the city of Babylon - the city of man or the world. Here in verse nine, John begins making a contrast. The city of man operates by what we see. The city of God operates by faith. (Hebrews 11:10) Every person – past and present – will either live in the city of man or the city of God.
When life gets hard and you are tired of waiting, are you tempted to take sinful shortcuts? Is that how you feel today? Do you doubt God and His goodness? We must live by faith and not by sight. To persuade us to trust God, John will give us a glorious description of the city.
