Passage: Matthew 5:43-48
The text today is all about contrast - contrasting interpretation of the law and contrasting pictures of love. Jesus is going to put down the tools of the divine carpenter and pick up the tools of a divine communicator. He will use the literary tool of antithesis, a figure of speech that uses contrasting terms to create a memorable effect. In the text today, it is the careful description of one system or standard and then a contrasting picture of another standard. So different are the two standards that there isn’t any way to say they are the same thing even if there is a common thread that connects them.
Today, we will look at Jesus’ antithetical statement, “You have heard that it was said…but I say to you.”
